LEARNING & EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT

A learning assessment uses standardised tests to assess a person’s academic or learning ability, in addition to their intellectual ability. Learning assessments are needed to diagnose specific learning difficulties and disorders, usually within an educational setting. The result is an understanding of the person’s:

• Ability in reading speed, accuracy and comprehension

• Spelling, grammar and writing abilities

• Mathematics ability

• Learning potential for schoolwork and academic work

Should learning difficulty or disability be indicated by the test results then further testing is required to determine if the person meets diagnostic criteria for a specific learning disorder. This testing involves a further two hours of testing with the person themselves, and a further two hours of scoring, interpretation and report preparation by your psychologist. Beyond this assessment it is possible to further explore specific cognitive difficulties that may be underlying the learning problems, and this possibility would be discussed at the time.
