What to expect from your first appointment

Step 1

Referral

Once you have your referral, call our practice and speak to our receptionist who will ask you some basic questions. This will help us determine who would be the best therapist for you. If you have specific requirements, please feel free to ask.

Step 2

Booking

Our receptionist will book an appointment with the psychologist or counsellor who best fits what you are looking for and who is available at a time that suits you.

Step 3

First Session

In our first session we focus on getting to know you and how we can support you reach your goals. We may spend time discussing your personal history which may include medical, family, childhood experiences. We usually ask you to fill in surveys to help identify your symptoms and track progress over time. We then spend some time discussing the most appropriate approaches for you.

Step 4

Review

At the end of this session your therapist should ask you a series of questions to make sure you are both on the same page.  If there is any aspect of this first session, or the approach the therapist is suggesting that you feel uncomfortable about it is important to let your therapist know so they can change their approach.

Therapy is about helping you.  Your therapist will use their best judgement to try and get the best approach from the outset. But if they get it wrong, let them know so they can fix it.

Cancellation Policy

Our cancellation policy is important to know, because it will keep your costs down. Please note that we need to receive at least 24 hours notice of non-attendance, otherwise a fee will be charged. Cancellations within 24 hours will be charged 100% of their fee. If we are able to re-book the session cancelled then a cancellation fee will not be charged, however with less than 24 hours notice it is often very difficult to rebook. Clients who fail to attend will be charged full session fee.
